Google asks for phone verification on new Gmail accounts depending on your profile and connection details. It does not ask every time, but when it does the step cannot be skipped. A single-use virtual number gets you through it.
The most important warning first
A Google account is different from other services: your email, files, backups and linked accounts all live there. After verifying with a virtual number, always add a recovery email and set up two-factor authentication with an authenticator app.
The reason is simple: you will not have access to that virtual number later. If Google ever asks you to re-verify and that number is your only recovery method, you lose the account. A recovery email removes that risk entirely.
Step by step
- On buy a number, choose Google / Gmail as the service.
- Pick a country that matches the IP you are connecting from.
- Paste the number into Google's phone field.
- The incoming 6-digit code appears live in your dashboard.
- Enter the code and finish creating the account.
- Immediately afterwards, add a recovery email in account settings and enable app-based 2FA.
Do not skip step six; it is the single most common cause of lost accounts.

Google is more sensitive to IP and number mismatch than Instagram. Connecting from Turkey with a German number can trigger extra checks.
Why does Google reject a number?
Three common reasons:
- VoIP line. Google rejects VoIP ranges at a high rate; you need a real carrier line. We explained the difference in what is non-VoIP.
- Number quota exhausted. Google limits how many accounts one number can verify. A heavily used number gets refused.
- IP mismatch. A large gap between your connection country and the number's country prompts extra verification.

Frequently asked questions
Can I create Gmail without a phone number at all? Sometimes: via the mobile app on a clean IP, Google may not ask. But it is not guaranteed and Google can require it whenever it chooses.
Can I remove the number from the account after verifying? Usually yes — once a recovery email and 2FA are in place you can remove the phone number in account settings. That is also a sensible precaution in case the number is later reassigned to someone else.
Can I open a second Gmail with the same number? No, the number returns to the pool after the order. And using one number for many accounts is exactly what Google polices most strictly; see will a virtual number account get banned.
Does this work for YouTube and Google Ads? The verification flow is the same because they all sit on one Google account. However, commercial products like Google Ads may require additional identity checks, and for those your own line is the better choice.
