Discord lets you sign up with just an email, yet in many situations it insists on phone verification: joining servers with the highest verification level, accounts created over a VPN or from a new device, and anything its anti-spam system finds suspicious trigger the "Phone verification required" screen. On top of that, Discord rejects VoIP and landline numbers. A one-time virtual number on a real carrier line gets you through without exposing your personal phone: you receive the number, the code appears in your dashboard, the account is verified.
Know this first
On Discord a phone number can be linked to only one account at a time; adding it to a second account removes it from the first. Discord also remembers numbers that were used before, so an old number produces "Invalid phone number" or "already in use". That is why a fresh, never-used number matters. After verification you can remove the number from the account; the account stays open. Do not rely on that number for SMS two-factor authentication; use an authenticator app instead.
Discord phone verification step by step
- Open Get a number and choose Discord as the service.
- Pick a country that matches the IP you connect from; if you use a VPN, go by the VPN's country.
- In Discord's phone field, select the country code, type the number from your dashboard and press Send.
- The code usually appears in the dashboard within 5–30 seconds; enter it in Discord.
- Once verified, open User Settings → My Account and make sure your email is verified.
- Optionally remove the phone number on the same screen; email plus an authenticator app is enough for recovery.
The number stays active for about 15 minutes. If no code arrives, the charge is refunded automatically; the rule is on the refund policy page.
Why does Discord say "Invalid phone number"?
Discord checks the carrier type of a number and flatly refuses VoIP, virtual PBX and landline ranges. Almost every number on free SMS sites falls into that class, which is why those numbers never work on Discord. SimBlink numbers are real mobile carrier lines; the difference is explained in what is a non-VoIP virtual number. You may see the same error on a number that was already used on Discord; cancel it and take a new one.
Which country suits Discord?
| Country | Price | Discord compatibility | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | High | High | One of the most stable options |
| United States | Medium | High | For US servers and US VPN exits |
| Netherlands | Medium | High | Strong alternative for European IPs |
| Germany | High | High | When the UK is out of stock |
| Türkiye | Medium | High | Smoothest with a Turkish IP |
| Indonesia | Low | Medium | Cheap; some ranges are rejected |
Discord is less strict than Telegram, but a mismatch between your IP and the number's country can trip the spam filter. The general logic is in the country selection guide.
When the Discord verification code does not arrive
- The number was used on Discord before. Discord may silently withhold the code without an error. Wait 2–3 minutes, cancel, take a new number.
- Too many attempts. Requesting codes back-to-back triggers a rate limit and a temporary block. Wait 10–15 minutes before the next try.
- VPN or data-center IP. Discord filters requests from data-center IPs more aggressively. Turn off the VPN or switch to mobile data if you can.
- Wrong country code. Make sure you entered the number with its own country code, not the one Discord preselected.
General causes are covered in SMS verification code not received.
Ban risk and safe use
Verifying with a virtual number is not a ban reason by itself; what Discord really watches is behavior. Joining dozens of servers at once with a brand-new account, mass DMs, spreading invite links or running a self-bot gets an account locked within minutes. Start with a profile picture and normal chat in a few servers, then expand. The general risk assessment is in will an account created with a virtual number get banned.
Frequently asked questions
Can I create a Discord account without a phone number? Yes, sign-up works with an email. A phone is requested when Discord gets suspicious or when a server uses the "Highest" verification level.
Will my account close if I remove the number after verifying? No, the account stays open. Only servers that require phone verification may ask for a number again.
Can I verify two Discord accounts with one number? No. Discord links a number to a single account; adding it to a second one removes it from the first. The number returns to the pool after your session anyway.
Is a virtual number enough for Discord Nitro or owning a server? For account verification, yes. Payments and community programs may require separate identity or payment checks; for accounts you will manage long-term, your own line is safer.
